Type Locality and Naming
SUBSURFACE: Well MND-8, Interval is 4898-5068 m. [Original Publication: Raju D.S.N, Dwivedi R.N, Misra Ravi, Stratigraphy of Mahanadi Basin, (2009) pp 293-296 in Raju and Misra (2009), ONGC Bulletin, Vol. 44, no.2]. Reference well: MND-5; Interval is 2888-2990 m.
Synonyms: Sequence-I of Mahapatra (2006); Mahanadi stages-M1 to M5 of Pandey, 1986.
Lithology and Thickness
Sandstone. Mainly sandstones with minor shales/claystones. A high gamma-ray section of alternation sand and shale occurs towards the top. About 400 m thickness in the graben areas and is thin over the horsts.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Unconformable with Salipur Volcanic Fm basalts = these volcanics are correlated with Rajmahal Traps Fm
Upper contact
Unconformable and coincides with Cretaceous-Paleogene (KTB) Hiatus; followed by Kalighat Fm

Fossils
Planktic foraminifera in the holostratotype include Globotruncana cacarata, Gt. arca, and R. fornicata and Rugoglobigerina rugosa. Equivalents of this age in some wells foraminifera are absent and the age is assigned based on palynological data.

Laterally varies from non-marine to middle-outer shelf.
